If you are interested in a few service hours, Wiregrass Hope Group has furniture to be moved on February 18th and February 22nd. 5 or 6 guys need to sign up. Please let Mr. Smith know if you are interested. Deadline is Wednesday, February 3rd.

NHS Students at PCS should be careful to keep up with their service hours. Students have to acquire 28 community service hours by April 30th. Students can check their total hours in Mr. Smith’s classroom, Room 111.

Service Hour Opportunities

The Southeast Alabama Child Advocacy Center has many service opportunities upcoming in preparation for and in honor of National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April. Providence Christian School National Honor Society students are welcome to sign up for any or all of the following:

1. The “Blue Ribbon Party” on March 1st from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. (Worth 3 service hours.)

2. Fill orders and help fold T-shirts on March 22nd and March 23rd. There are two shifts: 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.

3. Help with “Blue Ribbon Day” on April 3rd from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. or 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at local Walmart stores.

If a student is interested in signing up for any of these service hour opportunities, please see Mr. Smith to sign up. You have to sign up by February 5th.

Group Service Project

Each nine weeks, NHS at PCS takes on a group service project. All the members are required to attend and pitch-in. (The hours involved do not transfer to the students’ individual service hour requirement. Students still have to secure 28 hours of community service.)

For the first nine weeks of the 2009-2010 school year, we are assisting with the annual Sav-A-Life banquet on the evening of October 22nd.

2009 Fall Induction Ceremony

Providence Christian School’s National Honor Society induction was a blessed ceremony. Our officers officiated the service well, and we received a group of wonderful new students into the society. It was great to see the parents and grandparents in attendance.

However, the highlight of the day was hearing from rhetoric teacher, Mr. Frank Galati. Mr. Galati’s address to the students included an examination of another honorable society: the disciples of Christ. Mr. Galati drew out several important lessons from the Scripture’s depiction of these less-than-perfect Christ-followers, lessons our students can relate to their on-going pursuit of character, service, leadership, and scholarship in the National Honor Society.

Spreading The News (And Paint)

National Honor Society student Hap Howell spends time face painting at one (among many) events promoting Child Abuse Awareness month in April. The event was sponsored by Southeast Alabama Child Advocacy Center and held at Wiregrass Commons Mall.

Going Green

Providence Christian School National Honor Society President Preston Jones and the Student Government Association’s President Hudson Cheshire have collaborated to start a modest paper recycling program in the Rhetoric School. Boxes were placed in each classroom to collect paper items. On Wednesdays, Preston and Hudson go from classroom to classroom consolidating the paper collections and picking up the pizza boxes from lunch. Hudson runs all of it over to the local paper recycling bin.

I have been impressed with their initiative and leadership throughout the implementation and application of this project.
