Each nine weeks, NHS at PCS takes on a group service project. All the members are required to attend and pitch-in. (The hours involved do not transfer to the students’ individual service hour requirement. Students still have to secure 28 hours of community service.)
For the first nine weeks of the 2009-2010 school year, we are assisting with the annual Sav-A-Life banquet on the evening of October 22nd.

Providence Christian School’s National Honor Society induction was a blessed ceremony. Our officers officiated the service well, and we received a group of wonderful new students into the society. It was great to see the parents and grandparents in attendance.
However, the highlight of the day was hearing from rhetoric teacher, Mr. Frank Galati. Mr. Galati’s address to the students included an examination of another honorable society: the disciples of Christ. Mr. Galati drew out several important lessons from the Scripture’s depiction of these less-than-perfect Christ-followers, lessons our students can relate to their on-going pursuit of character, service, leadership, and scholarship in the National Honor Society.

Providence Christian School National Honor Society President Preston Jones and the Student Government Association’s President Hudson Cheshire have collaborated to start a modest paper recycling program in the Rhetoric School. Boxes were placed in each classroom to collect paper items. On Wednesdays, Preston and Hudson go from classroom to classroom consolidating the paper collections and picking up the pizza boxes from lunch. Hudson runs all of it over to the local paper recycling bin.
I have been impressed with their initiative and leadership throughout the implementation and application of this project.

Third nine weeks of 2009, NHS students have a wonderful opportunity to work with the Southeast Alabama Child Advocacy Center in Dothan. Students will select one of two group service projects: “Blue Ribbon” on March 2nd or “Kid’s Day” on April 18th.
The CAC’s service to our community’s families and children is much-needed. The CAC’s mission is “to serve as advocates for children and to reduce the trauma and anxiety for child victims of sexual and severe physical abuse.” They provide counseling and legal help.
PCS NHS is thankful to be able to partner with the CAC.

The National Honors Society at Providence is doing a little experiment in service: Beginning February 16, 2009, four NHS students each week will work morning carline. Through a rotation of four new students each week, NHS will be able to cover nine weeks of morning carline.
My hope is that the grammar school teachers get a bit of a break and our NHS juniors and seniors set an example of service and school spirit for our grammar school students. While being on campus at 7:20 is not the easiest idea to sell to rhetoric students, I have been impressed with their spirit of volunteerism. (And providing individual service hours didn’t hurt either . . . ) I have been thankful to see the leadership provided by our officers: both in NHS and in SGA.
